Back and Neck Pain

Four out of five Britons will suffer from backache at some time in their lives so it is not surprising that 50% of our patients come to see us because they are suffering from back Pain. Spinal manipulation and mobilisation are recognised as an effective way to manage both chronic and acute low back pain.

Managing your Low back pain

There are many causes of back pain and not all can be listed here, however some of the more common reasons are :

Disc injuries or a “slipped disc”

Our discs are in between each spinal bone (vertebrae) and act as our shock absorbers. Injury may occur to the discs for a variety of reasons: awkward or heavy lifting, recurrent bending, a slouched sitting posture or too many hours spent in the car each week.

Treatment for discal injuries depends on the level of damage. You may have a weakness in the outer part of the disc which allows it to bulge. In this case conservative treatment such as massage and exercises to strengthen the core muscles of the abdomen and low back are often helpful.

In some cases the disc can rupture allowing the jelly like substance in the middle to herniate out causing inflammation and pain.

These cases can take several months to heal fully.

Very occasionally surgery may be advised but the vast majority of disc injuries heal with time and the correct management.

Spinal joint sprains

Acute sprains to the low back joints can also occur. This may manifest as a sharp pain or muscle spasm in the low back and is often as a result of a sudden or awkward movement. However sometimes people will simply wake with symptoms.
Acute pain, and stiffness is felt often on initiating movements, for example getting up out of the chair. These episodes usually resolve relatively quickly with treatment and advice on exercises.

Trapped nerves or “Sciatica”

Some back conditions can result in the nerves of the low back becoming compressed or trapped, this may cause pain or pins and needles or numbness into the leg. This may be due to disc damage , acute spasms in the deep buttock muscles or swelling around the spinal joints where the nerves emerge from the spine. A full assessment is needed to be able to advise on which treatments and exercises are appropriate.

Neck Pain

There are many reasons for neck pain

  • Disc injury
  • Joint inflammation
  • Degeneration in the bones and joints
  • Postural tension
  • Anxiety related neck tension
  • Weak postural muscles

In some cases a problem in the neck can also lead to headaches, arm pain or symptoms of neuralgia. The osteopathic approach can help you understand the cause of the problem and will give you advice on how to alleviate you syptoms and advice on how to rehabilitate after a painful episode.
